About XSpearience

Marc Spear

The bottom line:

Occupationally, my principal is insurance/financial services…has been for decades.  Experientially, I’m an entrepreneur having been disguised as a corporate figure.  Educationally, I’m a ChFC, Certified Exit Planner (CEPA), with a bachelors in education.  My passion?  Teaching and consulting…that’s what I do within all I do.  Always have.

The normal stuff:

Found the insurance and financial services sector – went into business. Merged into a corporate role with a giant company. Amazing career – managed hundreds of people and tens of $millions. Worked in emerging markets, hiring, firing, legal, HR, marketing, P/L, political lobbying, public speaking, growth strategies, talent development, leadership, and stuff. Left it for lifestyle and family – back into entrepreneurship through the insurance/finance, goods/services, grocery, consulting, and non-profit adventures.

The real stuff:

I’m a paradox:

  • My dream is to live off the grid in a village of 200 people and have 3 close friends.
  • My dream is to influence and be influenced by thousands, have exhausting levels of responsibility, and be fueled by the rush of ambition.
  • These dreams used to be at odds.  Now they are in harmony.

I have failed more than I have succeeded.  My weaknesses far outnumber my strengths.  I credit both for what character I may have.

The rest:

I have a beautiful wife, four beautiful daughters, horses, cows, and space. I consider myself the richest man on earth due to the number of relationships in my life. I am content. I am thankful. And I am at peace. I could die tomorrow with no regrets having fit many lifetimes worth of experiences into the short one I’ve lived. But as long as I’m breathing, may as well keep at it.

We all have choices about how we approach what we do. Here are a few mindsets that guide how I approach XSpearience.

I stay curious. When I was a boy, I was fortunate to be a friend of the most capable and sought after heavy machinery mechanic in my home state, Alaska. He was 65 years old and knew all there was to know about everything mechanical. He was the master. Yet one morning, he saw an old bulldozer sitting across the way. He said to me, “Let’s go look that dozer over and learn something we don’t know. Never go a day without learning something.” I’m trying to carry on that part of his legacy.

I consider all my careers a paid education. I’m here to learn, not tell. Yes, we gain knowledge and wisdom over time, but there’s a humility that comes by having a student mindset. I hope I never lose that.

I try to find adventure in what I do. This leads me to say yes to unordinary things. It helps me avoid group think. It motivates me to create my own, personal career path. And it has led to growth and development I never could have foreseen and for which I’m exceedingly grateful.

What’s your mindset? The choice is up to you. We all face challenges, but how you see the world makes all the difference. Every one of us has something to offer. If you’re still on the planet, you have potential for impact. To build a legacy. But we all need help to grow. And influence will come when our abilities match the competence our ideas require.

Don’t worry about the “competence.” Start with your “why” and other aspects of your mindset. Once those begin to take form, XSpearience can help you gain competence and get to where you want to go. But it starts with a mindset. Be a learner. Be curious. Be adventurous. Say yes.

Welcome to XSpearience. I’m glad you’re here.
